Religion is a big part of our culture here in southeast Texas. I constantly caution newcomers "We are not just in the Bible Belt, but we are in the buckle's hole at the center of the Bible belt." Why is it then that crime, homelessness, poverty, and the Democratic Party is at epidemic levels in our area? Where is God? Evidently not in the hearts of men.
The Rev. G.W. Daniels, of the Sunlite Missionary Baptist Church, located on Rev. G.W. Daniels St, just west of MLK, in Beaumont, TX, has this sign posted on the outside wall of his church. I must say took me by surprise!
"Females in Pants Will Not be Allowed in Church"
I was so surprised at the overt Pharasitical nature of this rule that I had to hi-lite it on our web site.
The sun rises over good as well as evil. The hi-lited area is pictured below.
This picture was taken October 4th, 2007.
Legalism is alive and well in the churches in this area.
Have you ever been to a church like this one?
It reminds me of an e-mail I recently read::
The Old Cowboy
One Sunday morning an old cowboy entered a church just before services were to begin. Although the old man and his clothes were spotlessly clean & pressed, he wore jeans, a denim shirt and boots that were very worn and ragged. In his hand he carried a worn out old hat and an equally well read Bible. (This couldn't have been in our area, because the cowboy took his hat off while he was indoors.)
The church he entered was in a very upscale and exclusive part of the city. It was the largest and most beautiful church the old cowboy had ever seen. The people of the congregation were all dressed with expensive clothes and jewelry.
As the cowboy took a seat, the others moved away from him. No one greeted, spoke to, or welcomed him. They were all appalled by his appearance and did not attempt to hide it.
As the old cowboy was leaving the church, the preacher approached him and asked the cowboy to do him a favor. "Before you come back in here again, have a talk with God and ask him what he thinks would be appropriate attire for worship in church." The old cowboy assured the preacher he would.
The next Sunday, he showed back up for the services wearing the same ragged jeans, shirt, boots, and hat. Once again he was completely shunned and ignored. The preacher approached the cowboy and said, "I thought I asked you to speak to God before you came back to our church."
"I did," replied the old cowboy.
"If you spoke to God, what did he tell you the proper attire should be for worshiping in here?" asked the preacher.
"Well, sir, God told me that He didn't have a clue what I should wear. He said He'd never been in this church . . . . . . . . . ."
Food for thought. 11.27.07
Oh, I just ran across this little bit that seemed appropriate and quite nice. It was written by a friend, and told to me by another friend who when he heard it the first time, over twenty years earlier, was so impressed that he still rememberes it verbatim.
On Sunday

I would rather be riding my bicycle
on a trail,
on Sunday,
thinking of God,
than sitting in church,
thinking of riding my bicycle.

This is kinda neat. There seems to have been a change of heart. Here's the front of that church as of October 2009.
Scars remain...
Is there a change of heart on the part of the Rev G.W. Daniels? - or - Is there a new Sheriff in town? Either way, I salute the change. Did they read the New part of the Bible?
